With a PhD in engineering, Professor WAN Gang is Vice Chairman of the 11th Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Chairman of China Zhi Gong Party, and Minister of Science and Technology.
Mr. WAN Gang went to work in the rural area of Yanbian Prefecture, Jilin Province as an educated youth in 1969.He graduated with a bachelor's degree from Northeast Forestry University in 1978, after which he joined its faculty. From 1979 to 1981, he was a postgraduate in experimental mechanics at Structural Theories Research Institute of Tongji University, where he got his master's degree in 1981 and served as a faculty member from 1981 to 1985. Between 1985 and 1991, he studied and obtained doctorate (Dr. Ing.) at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Technical University Clausthal of Germany.From 1991 to 2001, he worked in German Audi Corporation.
In January 2001, he took the post as Dean of New Energy Automobile Engineering Center, Tongji University in China. He worked successively as Assistant President of Tongji University from August 2001, Vice President from June 2003, and President (Vice Minister level) from July 2004. In December 2006, he became Vice Chairman of China Zhi Gong Party and was elected as Chairman in December 2007. In April 2007, he was appointed as Minister of Science and Technology. From 2003, he served as member of the National Committee and the Standing Committee of the 10th CPPCC. In March 2008, he was elected Vice Chairman of the 11th CPPCC.
Minister Wan is in charge of the overall administrative affairs. He oversees the Department of Development Planning and National Major Special Project Office.
