With a PhD in engineering, Professor WAN Gang is Vice Chairman of the 11th and 12th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Chairman of the Central Committee of the China Zhi Gong Party, and Minister of Science and Technology.
He worked in the rural area of the Yanbian Prefecture, Jilin Province as an educated youth in 1969, graduated with a bachelor's degree from the Northeast Forestry University in 1978 and later joined its faculty. From 1979 to 1981, he was a postgraduate in experimental mechanics at the Structural Theories Research Institute of Tongji University and obtained his master's degree in 1981. He served as a faculty member from 1981 to 1985. Between 1985 and 1991, he studied and obtained a doctorate (Dr. Ing.) at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Clausthal University of Technology of Germany. From 1991 to 2001, he worked in the German Audi Group.
In January 2001, he took the post as Director of New Energy Automobile Engineering Center, Tongji University in China. Later he was Assistant President of Tongji University from August 2001, Vice President from June 2003, and President (Vice Minister level) from July 2004. In December 2006, he became Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of the China Zhi Gong Party and was elected as Chairman in December 2007. In April 2007, he was appointed as Minister of Science and Technology. From 2003, he served as a member of the National Committee and the Standing Committee of the 10th CPPCC. In March 2008, he was elected Vice Chairman of the 11th National Committee of the CPPCC. In June 2016, he was elected as President of the 9th National Committee of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST).
Minister Wan is in charge of the overall administrative affairs.
