On 26 December 2006, the Department of Rural Science and Technology of MOST organized in Beijing a working conference for checking and evaluating the special project of "Study and Commercialization of Transgenic Plants".

This special project kicked off by the approval of the State Council in 1999. With 5.1 hundred million Yuan input by the central finance and 3.2 hundred million Yuan by different government departments, localities and the public, this special project was mainly devoted to such research work as functional gene clone, development of transgenic new materials, innovation of core technologies for gene transformation, cultivation and commercialization of new products, transgenic plant safety evaluation and construction of transgenic platform. Revolving the construction of agricultural ecology, with the concerted efforts of all sides and close industry -study-research combination, this 6-year special project has achieved a series of significant breakthroughs, innovative results and overfulfilled the specified objectives and strategic missions by sufficiently integrating China's advantages of resources, human power and technology in the research area of transgenic plants.
