On May 19, 2016, Chinese Minister of Science and Technology Wan Gang met with Slovenian Minister of Economic Development and Technology Zdravko Počivalšek in Beijing. The two sides had an in-depth exchange of views and reached broad consensus on cooperation in science, technology and innovation.
Minister Wan extended a welcome to Minister Počivalšek for his visit and appreciated Slovenia's scientific innovation and industrial strengths. Under the guidance of China-Slovenia Scientific and Technological Cooperation Committee, the two sides had made practical achievements in scientific research cooperation, Minister Wan Gang said. The Chinese side is willing to work together with the Slovenian side to facilitate cooperation in areas of new energy, new materials, ICT, bio-pharmaceuticals, food processing, and auto industry. Minister Wan said the Chinese government was implementing the innovation-driven development strategy, which coincided with the initiative of the Slovenian government to improve entrepreneurship environment and promote innovative businesses. He suggested that the two sides:
I. Advance cooperation between businesses of the two countries and encourage mutual investments in major projects and programs;
II. Strengthen technology transfer;
III. Optimize the innovative ecosystem to support the growth of SMEs, especially start-ups.
Minister Počivalšek embraced Minister Wan's suggestion. He said the two countries boasted good bilateral ties and engaged in increasingly close cooperation at the state and local levels. Having accomplished industrialization relatively early, Slovenia enjoys strengths in conventional technology. He hoped that, under the Belt and Road Initiative, the two sides could strengthen cooperation in infrastructure construction, technology transfer and high technology.
Slovenian Ambassador to China Janez Premože was also present at the meeting.
